Annual Enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7, and a change you make in that window takes effect on January 1, 2027. Most of the attention goes to premiums and drug costs, and those matter. But the question that causes the most trouble in January is a simpler one: is my doctor still in my plan? A Medicare Advantage plan that looks perfect on paper is the wrong plan if the cardiologist you have seen for ten years is not in its network.
Why the Network Matters More Than the Premium
Original Medicare lets you see any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare. A Medicare Advantage plan works differently. Each plan builds a network of doctors, hospitals and other providers, and the plan’s rules decide what happens when you go outside it. With an HMO style plan, care outside the network is generally not covered except in emergencies and a few other situations. With a PPO style plan, you can usually go out of network, but you pay more for it.
That means two plans with the same premium and the same drug coverage can lead to very different years for you. One keeps your whole care team in place. The other sends you looking for a new primary care doctor in February.
Networks Change From One Year to the Next
It is easy to assume that because your doctor was in your plan this year, they will be in it next year. That is not guaranteed. Plans and provider groups renegotiate their contracts, and a practice can join or leave a network for the new plan year. Your plan’s Annual Notice of Change describes changes to costs and benefits, but the surest way to know where your own doctors stand is to check each one directly.
This is also true if you are thinking about switching plans. The new plan’s network is the one that matters, and the time to find out is before you enroll, not after the first claim comes back denied.
How to Check Your Doctors, Step by Step
Medicare’s own guidance is plain on this point: ask your doctors and pharmacies whether they are in network with the plan you are considering. Here is a practical way to do that without spending a week on the phone.
- Write down every provider you saw in the last year, including specialists you see only once or twice, your preferred hospital, and any outpatient clinic or imaging center you use.
- Look each one up in the plan’s online provider directory for the 2027 plan year, not the current year. Directories are organized by plan, so make sure you are searching the exact plan name you are considering.
- Call the doctor’s office and ask the billing staff a specific question: will you be in network for this plan in 2027? Front desk staff can usually answer quickly, and they hear the question often this time of year.
- Write down who you spoke with and the date. If something goes wrong later, that note helps.
If a provider you depend on is not in the network, that does not automatically rule the plan out, but it should weigh heavily, especially for a specialist you see regularly.
Hospitals Deserve Their Own Check
People tend to check their primary care doctor and stop there. The hospital question is just as important. Around Knoxville, many people have a strong preference for one hospital system, whether it is because their doctors practice there, because it is closest to home, or because of a past experience. Look up the hospitals you would want to use for a planned surgery or an overnight stay, and confirm their network status for the plan year you are choosing.
It is also worth knowing where the nearest in network urgent care is. For someone in Maryville, Oak Ridge or Lenoir City, a plan that has no convenient in network urgent care can be a frustrating plan on an ordinary weekend.
Pharmacies Are Part of the Network Too
Drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage use pharmacy networks, and many have preferred pharmacies where your share of the cost is lower. If you like your local pharmacist, check whether that pharmacy is in network and whether it is preferred for the plan. The same prescription can cost noticeably different amounts at two pharmacies a mile apart, depending on the plan.
What If You Pick a Plan and Your Doctor Is Not In It?
There is a second window that helps here. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs from January 1 to March 31. During it, you can switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare. So if you discover in January that a key doctor is out of network, you are not necessarily stuck for the whole year.
That said, it is much easier to get this right in the fall. A January switch means new cards, new paperwork and possibly a new set of providers, and going back to Original Medicare does not by itself guarantee you can buy a Medicare Supplement policy on the terms you want. Checking before December 7 avoids all of it.
When a Medicare Supplement Might Fit Better
For some people, network questions point toward a different kind of coverage altogether. If you travel often, split the year between Tennessee and another state, or see specialists in more than one health system, the flexibility of Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement can be worth the higher monthly premium. For others, especially those who are healthy and happy with a single local care team, a Medicare Advantage plan with the right network works well.
